bristol zoo has closed
they closed the zoo where the children went
the elephant rides past the high tea tent
white tigers bored with an occasional growl
sent everyone backwards with a terrible howl
monkeys doing what monkeys do
oh why did they close dear old bristol zoo
who will feed the slippery fish to the shiny seals
or give the penguins their daily meals
who will close the double doors
to the butterfly house in its coloured clothes
and who will crawl through the insect house
stare at the warm rocks and the creepy louse
and the reptile house is hotter still
the flickering tongues on the black anvil
and prairie dogs laughing their bald heads off
dusty flats caps to everyone doff
craning our necks to see the giraffes some more
stooping to see them leave by the lowly door
elephant house with huge mounds of dung
drying and as anal retentive as old carl jung
school trips they called excursions when we went to see
all the animals from a to z
but never no more will the days be complete
for all the animals are finally exeat
take home your buns and take home your kids
they have locked the gates they closed the lids
just one lonely sign on the top of a wall
all there is to show it was ever there at all
