be careful next time be careful
it was icy
the slope from the ward to the morgue
cobbled with the ages of
the workhouse it had been
the moons it had seen
the tears that had toiled
just like this slope
two slippery minded bearers
of the sadness late of a day’s mourning
when it happened
a misstep sent the body sliding
riding the shrouded sleigh way
away down there the chase ensued
grimaced in smiles caught
at last
and resting in dignity again
the trolley trundled as intended
the destination as portended
all was deep breaths hanging as mist
upon it’s restoration
the stars blinked once or twice
and in we went
the door closed on a cold regret
the fire roared with the draught’s laughter
tea cups chink chuckled
influenza spreading like a smile
next time more care
next time
